Zamalek, Blue Waves and Dog Food Burgers in Soweto

As all South Africans know, it was the Super 14 Final at the Orlando Stadium in Soweto last Saturday - and we were lucky enough to go!!

Spirits were high and the town was literally painted blue with Blue Bulls and Stormers supporters descending upon Soweto in their droves. Quart beers were being sold in their hundreds from Mododa’s Place – the shebeen where we ended up having pre-game drinks. They also served tasty boerewors rolls off the grill – yum! I have to add that it was quite strange being in a shebeen in Soweto listening to Afrikaans music and eating boeries on the pavement, but anyhoo…

The Orlando Staduim was very well geared for beer drinkers and snackers… but for the hungry there was very little on offer, and what they did serve were burgers that tasted like dog food. (Ok, the burgers were only R10.00, so what were we expecting?)

All and all our expedition to Soweto made for a very entertaining afternoon, and I don’t think we’re going to see so many Blue Bulls in Soweto any time soon, so you could say we were there for an historic occasion! But if there is a ‘next time’, I’ll certainly be packing a lunch box…
